Abstract(500words,includesobjectives,methods,results,conclusions,andkeywords)Objectives:Obesityanditsrelatedillnessisaprimaryhealthconcerntoday.Wepresentourresultswiththelaparoscopicadjustablegastricband(LAGB)orLap-BandSystem,regardingweightloss,plications,andeffectonco-morbiditieswithupto3-yearfollow-up.
Methods:91morbidlyobesepatients(meanage31.2years,meanpreoperativeweight120.8Kg)underwentlaparoscopicadjustablegastricbandingsurgeryinaprivateTaiwanhospitalsettingwithinaprehensivemultidisciplinarybariatricprogram.Patientswerefollowedupto36months.Co-morbiditystatuswasassessedfor55patientswhopleted>,12monthollow-upbyparingeachco-morbidconditionbeforesurgeryandfollow-up.
Results:Allprocedureswereperformedlaparoscopicallywithnoconversion.Meanoperationtimewas88.7+32.9minutes.Therewasneitherintra-operativeplicationnormajorpostoperativeplication.Minorplicationofstomastenosisoccurredinatients(3.3%).At36monthsaftersurgery,meanbodymassindex(BMI)haddecreasedfrom42.7to33.9Kg/m2andmeanpercentageofexcessweightloss(%EWL)was44.8%.Lateplicationswereaollows:intractablevomitingrequiringbandremovalinone(1.1%),tubingproblemsrequiringrevisionsurgeryin4patients(4.3%),stomaobstructionin2patients(2.1%).Therewasnomortality.Resolutionorimprovementofco-morbiditiesweresignificantinhyperglycemiaanddiabetesrelatedindex,dyslipidemia,abnormalliverfunction,hyperuricemia,sleepapnea,andarthralgia,butthedifferencebetweentheincidenceofhypertensionwereundetectable.
Conclusions:Gastricbandingprovidesgoodweightlossandsignificantreductioninco-morbiditieswithfewminorplications.
